Chase Twichell’s “Vestibule”

Franz Wright’s “Night Writing”

At a Concord Bookshop poetry reading filmed exclusively by The Student Publishing Program, Franz Wright reads “Night Writing,” from Earlier Poems (Alfred A. Knopf, 2007). Franz Wright is the author of thirteen collections of poetry; his Walking to Martha's Vineyard (Alfred A. Knopf, 2003) was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. He has received the PEN/Voelcker Award for Poetry, as well as grants and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Whiting Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Franz Wright, son of the poet James Wright, began writing when he was very young. At 15, he sent one of his poems to his absentee father, who wrote back, “You’re a poet. Welcome to hell.” James and Franz Wright are the only father and son to have won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.

Generally considered to be the most successful poetry slam strategist of all time, having led six of his seven national poetry slam teams to the finals stage and winning the championship itself a record four times before anyone had even tied him at three, Mali was one of the original poets to appear on the HBO original series "Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry." Mali received a New York Foundation for the Arts Grant in 2001 to develop "Teacher! Teacher!" a one-man show about poetry, teaching, and math which won the jury prize for best solo performance at the 2001 U. S. Comedy Arts Festival.

David Lehman’s “The Difference Between Pepsi And Coke”

In an exclusive reading for The Student Publishing Program, David Lehman reads “The Difference Between Pepsi And Coke”, from An Alternative To Speech (Princeton University Press, 1986). David Lehman is the author of six books of poems, most recently When a Woman Loves a Man (Scribner, 2005). He initiated The Best American Poetry series in 1988 and received a Guggenheim Fellowship a year later. He edited Great American Prose Poems: From Poe to the Present, which appeared from Scribner in 2003. He teaches writing and literature in the graduate writing program of the New School in New York City and offers an undergraduate course each fall on “Great Poems” at New York University. He is the editor of a new edition of The Oxford Book of American Poetry, a one-volume comprehensive anthology of poems from Anne Bradstreet to the present.
